Have you ever wondered how I create the intricate surfaces on my pieces with underglaze? In this class, I will share my approach to underglaze surface decoration which covers how I think about design segmenting and color blocking, blend underglaze color, utilize sgraffito and paint fine lines to create the detail and design on the surfaces of my sculptural birds. In this introductory class, I recommend starting with a simple design on your bird so that you have the time to learn the basic techniques. If you didn’t take my Handbuilding Stylized Bird class prior to this one, you can substitute your own small sculptural piece. Bone dry clay is preferred for the class as it will allow your piece to dry faster after each underglaze application. This class consists of three portions: The first portion consists of pre-recorded videos which cover the following: my preference for working with bone dry clay, thinking about color and how it relates to your design, preparing the surface of the bird for underglaze painting, painting the first few coats of underglaze on the surface of the bird, creating designs and stencils for the bird, design transfer and color blocking. The second portion is the class recording which is dedicated to exploring the detail work as we create small blended areas of color, outline them with black underglaze using a fine line brush and discuss how to create a finished look for your sculptural piece. The third portion is the recorded questions and answers session. It is informative as it is directed by prior students and their questions about what I may not have covered during the class. This will give you a basic understanding of the way I approach underglaze painting and design. Consider your design first. Look at photos of birds and notice their head, wings, breast, tail, etc. for design inspiration. Create your design and break it down into individual components: head, wings, breast, and tail. Decide what color you predominantly want your (bird) sculpture to be. Underglaze Painting (Video 8 "Preparing Your Bird For Underglaze Painting," and Video 9 if using white earthenware. Wipe down your bone dry sculpture with a sponge to remove any dirt or rough areas. After letting your piece dry thoroughly, apply your first layer of underglaze with a brush. After letting your piece dry thoroughly, apply your second layer of underglaze with a brush. After letting your piece dry thoroughly, apply your third layer of underglaze with a brush. Finalize your design Cover your piece while you finish working on your design. Break your design down into sections for color blocking and create templates or design transfers on tracing paper. Pencil or transfer your design onto your piece. Class Cost: $112.50 (This price reflects a 10% discount off the cost of the Zoom class of $125 because there is no "live" component.) Content: 12 Digital downloadable documents 23 Instructional videos at approximately 4 hours, 19 minutes Class Recording videos at approximately 2.5 Hours Question and Answer Session at approximately 27 minutes Design and color block meeting 11 minutes SKILL LEVEL: A basic understanding of ceramics is necessary. No drawing skills are needed as participants can take a photo of their desired imagery and copy it with tracing paper. With the world continuing to be off balance, I’m trying to find some simplicity and serenity. What better way to do that than create a wall piece that features a visual element that brings peace of mind. Whether it’s a morning cup of coffee or listening to a singing bird that relaxes you, we can create a wall piece centered around it. The focus of this class will be the detailed painting on the surface of your wall piece. With that in mind and with the help of several pre-recorded videos, participants will create their own wall piece prior to class, allowing enough drying time for the wall piece to be in the bone dry stage a few days prior to class. Instructional videos will demonstrate the following: creating and preparing slabs to make a wall piece, how to remove the canvas texture from slabs, discussion of design options, creating a template to cut your wall piece from a slab of clay, prep for underglaze painting, basic underglaze painting, background blending and design transfer. The class recording focuses on painting the design on the wall shrine which will include blending smaller areas of color, outlining images with black underglaze using a detail brush and sgraffito work. This will give you a basic understanding of the way I approach underglaze painting and design. Consider your design first. Creativity exercise: What is it that gives you a sense of serenity? Nature, coffee, tea, music, sleep, dogs, cats, etc. Find visual elements that you want to develop into your design. Create your design, transfer it onto a manilla folder or cover stock and cut it out. Creating your slab (Videos 6-9). Using a rolling pin or slab roller, create your slab and remove the canvas texture. Lay your template on your slab gently and using a needle tool, cut out your wall piece. Gently remove the unused slab from around your wall piece. Transfer the wall piece to your ware board for drying. Underglaze Painting (Videos 10-17). Decide what color you want your wall piece background to be. Finalize your design (Video18). Cover your piece while you finish working on your design. (This keeps the surface of the underglaze free of dust until you’re ready to begin painting in the details during class.) Break your design down into sections for color blocking and create templates or design transfers on tracing paper. Pencil or transfer your design onto your piece. Once you’ve completed these steps, you will be ready for class! Videos 19-26 go into specific steps in my underglaze painting process. These are also covered in the class recording.
